About the E-Quip Gap Year

The E-Quip Gap Year offers the same Study Programme as Equilibria’s Gap Year that is offered in Potchefstroom (South Africa), but in a blended learning format that combines online and onsite training. The blended learning approach has the advantage of making the gap year significantly more affordable than its onsite equivalent presented in Potchefstroom.

Equilibria collaborate with a number of church-partners in major cities to do some onsite training and mentoring for the E-Quip Gap Year. The Life Skills and Career Guidance programmes are offered online.

The Fitness training is usually presented in a Virgin Active Gym and will keep you in great shape, both physically and mentally.

Where can I do the E-Quip Gap Year?

To do the E-quip gap year, you need to live in (or close) one of the cities listed below to complete certain training that forms part of the gap year at a church and a gym that collaborates with us.

How does the E-Quip Gap Year work?

What will you do at the church?

You will do Discipleship training one afternoon per week at a church. The Discipleship training aims to equip you with a better understanding of the Christian faith and help you grow spiritually. Read more about the Discipleship Programme here.

You will also receive one-to-one mentoring one afternoon per week from the Student Mentor at the church. We call this a ‘U-chat’  because it is all about YOU: your wellbeing, your career, your fitness progress and overall happiness.

You will socialize with other E-Quip students and do some community work at the church one afternoon per week. The Student Mentor at the church will provide you with details on the community work.

How does the online Life Skills Study Programme work in the E-Quip Gap Year?

Equilibria’s online Life Skills programme are live streamed from 9h00 -12h30 every morning and you can do it in the comfort of your home on a laptop or smartphone. Since all the classes are live-streamed in real time, you will feel part of all the activities that happen in the classroom. You will also be able to interact with other gap year students via your smartphone or our social media platform.

You can access the online classroom from this website, once you are registered for the gap year.  You will receive a printed manual for each Life Skills course (at the church) to use as a workbook during your studies. Tests and exams are completed online.

You will receive instructions on how to do practical work at home.

How does Career Guidance work in the E-Quip Gap Year?

The E-Quip Gap Year follows the same Career Guidance programme as Equilibria’s Gap Year but relies mainly on online guidance. You will be guided to complete various career planning steps and self-knowledge tests online to create your Personality Profile. The profile will be used as a basis for your decision-making process.

You will also receive a printed Career Guidance Study Guide and other workbooks at the church that you attend. Individual career coaching sessions with Equilibria’s Career Coach can be scheduled via skype or telephone.

Certain weeks will be made available for practical career research and fieldwork such as job shadowing and interviews. You will be required to visit tertiary institutions or make appointments with people to interview or shadow. You will receive clear instructions in the online classroom how to do the practical career research effectively.

How does the Fitness Programme work in the E-Quip Gap Year?

As part of the E-Quip Study Programme, you will be required to join a gym (preferably a Virgin Active gym) to do the Fitness program. The Student Mentor at the church will link you up with the gym that collaborates with the E-Quip gap year to support and monitor your fitness programme.

You will be required to exercise at least twice a week to keep you physically in shape and mentally alert.  The Student Mentor at the church will monitor your fitness progress at the gym and keep you motivated.

Terms and holidays are the same as South Africa’s North-West Province school calendar.

Camps

E-Quip students have the option to attend Equilibria’s camps at Thabela Thabeng, North West Province, South Africa.

The following camps are part of the programme:

  • February: Ice-break Camp at the beginning of the year: make new friends and become part of the Equilibria family.
  • April: Christian Q and A Camp: boost your faith and understanding of Christianity. Meet fellow Christians.
  • October: Adventure camp: do fun activities and adventure challenges.

Camps are not included in the E-Quip Gap Year fee and usually costs between R500 – R700 per camp.

Europe Tour

E-Quip students can join Equilibria’s unforgettable Europe Tour at the end of the year and conclude the gap year on an exciting note with other gap year students.

Certification:

Full participation in the online Life Skills study programme, the Fitness programme and Discipleship course are required to qualify for certification of the courses. Your participation will be monitored throughout the programme to determine if you qualify for a certificate.

Costs:

The online Life Skills and Career Guidance programme make it possible to study largely from home which reduces the costs of the gap year remarkably. The one-year Study Programme costs R19 750, printed manuals included, internet data and optional activities excluded. The Fitness Programme requires a gym membership and costs approximately R400 per month.
