HEALTH AND FITNESS COURSE

This coursemarks the official launch of Equilibria’s Health and Fitness Programme and will take place partly at the Virgin Active Health Club.

Students will:

  • establish their own personal fitness programme

  • discover various fun ways to exercise

FINANCIAL SKILLS COURSE

HEALTH AND NUTRITION COURSE

CAREER GUIDANCE WEEK
The Career Guidance Week will guide students through a step-by-step career guidance process, helping them to arrive at a self-defined vision for their future. A range of narrative tests, psychometric tests and mental activities will help them gain in-depth self-knowledge.

Students will:

  • identify their unique talents, strengths and weaknesses
  • determine their true passions and interests
  • understand their personality type and which careers suit their personality
  • discover their work style preferences and their work related values
  • find out about several study options and entry requirements
  • learn what skills and talents are needed for the careers that interest them
  • determine what career possibilities are made possible by each qualification
  • receive training on how to do career research
SAFETY AND SELF-DEFENSE COURSE

Students will learn how to:

  • do lifesaving self-defense techniques
  • prevent and deal with crime circumstances
  • protect themselves in dangerous situations
  • avoid being a drug victim at social events
  • practice vital safety principles when they go out at night
  • change a flat tire
  • practice road safety principles
WORK ETHICS PROGRAMME

Equilibria’s Work Ethics Programme requires that each student should engage in part-time work or volunteer work to gain experience in a real-life work environment.

Students will learn how to:

  • maintain a professional relationship with an employer
  • be punctual and responsible and in a workplace
  • apply problem-solving and crisis management skills
  • be task-orientated and  dependable
  • proper telephone etiquette and social skills

RELATIONSHIP SKILLS COURSE

Students will learn:

CAREER VIDEO PROGRAMME
During this week, students will have an opportunity to watch a series of videos to help them gain important insights on various career – or study options. Equilibria has a comprehensive data basis of videos of interviews with people at various universities, colleges and private institutions as well as with people in a variety of professional professions.
Students will learn how to conduct a career interview and how to do proper career research.
STUDY SKILLS COURSE

Students will learn:

  • to identify their unique style of learning
  • effective note-taking and study techniques for tertiary study
  • to improve their  memory, concentration and listening skills
  • effective ways to handle test and examination anxiety
  • how to plan and organize studies effectively
  • how to improve their attitude and motivation towards study
  • how to cope with high volumes of work
  • how to adapt their learning environment for better results
STYLE AND IMAGE COURSE

Students will learn:

  • to define their personal style
  • which colours suit their complexion the best
  • to do a body analysis to determine their body shape
  • how to dress to look slimmer, taller or shorter
  • how to avoid fashion mistakes
  • how to use accessories wisely
  • to identify and understand their unique face shapes
  • valuable guidelines for wardrobe planning
  • how to shop wisely and cost effectively
  • how to do make-up correctly (ladies)
  • how to do effective grooming (gentlemen)
CAREER STUDY RESEARCH

During this week students will visit one or more tertiary institutions to do research on which study programmes to follow. They will be required to:

  • Interview lecturers and students, using structured questionnaires
  • Attend classes with students
  • View handbooks of subjects
  • Obtain application forms, information booklets and brochures
  • Find out about entry requirements, accommodation and costs of study
FIRST AID LEVEL I COURSE

Students will learn how to:

  • perform CPR and treat drowning or choking
  • check for vital signs, unconsciousness and fainting
  • take care of wounds, bleeding and burns
  • treat fractures, do bandaging and splinting
  • treat head injuries, bites, stings and poisoning
  • remain calm in an emergency situation and treat shock
LEGAL SKILLS COURSE

During this week students will have an opportunity to visit a real-life court case to learn more about court procedures and legal processes.

Students will learn:

  • about common legal mistakes that people tend to make
  • the essentials of entering into contracts, including marital contracts
  • how to act legally correct during emergencies or crime situations
  • what their rights are when in a car accident
  • when one can act in self-defense
  • what to look out for in employment contracts
  • how court procedures are conducted
  • what their rights are when they rent or buy a flat or a home
ETIQUETTE COURSE

Students will learn:

  • golden rules of social etiquette and public conduct
  • polite e-mail and cell phone etiquette
  • how to eat certain foods correctly
  • appropriate host and hostess etiquette
  • graceful dating etiquette
  • special occasion etiquette such as funerals and weddings
  • the difference between various culture’s etiquette
  • how to introduce people correctly
  • appropriate dinner party etiquette
WINE APPRECIATION COURSE

The course will be enhanced by practical wine tasting and wine-and-food pairing sessions.

Students will learn:

  • the do’s and don’ts of alcohol misuse
  • all about the making, tradition and culture of wine
  • how to appreciate the unique qualities of each wine
  • how to serve and store wine correctly
  • what stemware to use for each beverage

THE TALENT AND PASSION FESTIVAL

The annual Talent and Passion Festival is a fun week at Equilibria that pays tribute to each student’s unique talents and passions. This entertaining week give students an opportunity to showcase their hobbies, musical talents and any type of skill or passion that they have. Students are encouraged to do weird and wonderful items – anything from blowing bubblegum bubbles to card tricks! The festival aims to build self-confidence in students, helping them to reach higher levels of self-actualization.

TIME AND STRESS MANAGEMENT COURSE

Students will learn how to:

  • how to identify and manage stress in their lives
  • how to use laughter therapy to combat stress
  • how to respond effectively to change
  • to prioritise activities according to their values
  • how to do progressive relaxation and visualization
  • how to optimize brain power and work more efficiently
  • to improve their wellness through a balanced lifestyle
  • how to find time for activities that really matters
  • how to prevent a burnout
  • how to use a diary effectively and plan ahead
CRITICAL THINKING COURSE

Students will learn to:

  • think about the challenging questions of life
  • widen their horizons and develop general knowledge
  • discover amazing new world trends and innovations
  • question assumptions and learn critical thinking techniques
  • develop, define and defend their own worldview
  • understand the origin of other people’s worldviews
  • investigate ethical issues and form an opinion about them
THE CHRISTIAN CAMP

Equilibria’s Christian Camp takes place in a scenic mountain resort next to the Vaal river. The format of the camp is relaxed and consists of informative talks, counseling and prayer sessions, testimonials and informal small group discussions. The camp aims to help each student find their true identity in Christ and discover their purpose in life. While various challenging questions are addressed, the focus is mainly on helping students to experience God as a reality and to build a close relationship with Him.

FILM FESTIVAL: WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE?

The annual Film Festival hosts a series of the best quality movies that was shown on the circuit in the past decades. The movies are used to facilitate an assignment-based exploration about what is truly important in life. Students take part in lively discussions surrounding the issue of what gives meaning in life…

CHALLENGE AND ADVENTURE WEEK

Equilibria’s Challenge and Adventure week is an unforgettable highlight of the gap year course. The week consists of a series of challenges and adventures that dare students to break out of their comfort zones, overcome fears and achieve personal victories. Challenges include several indoor and outdoor activities such white-water river rafting, abseiling, hiking and a number of survival activities.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE

Students will learn:

  • the basic technical mechanisms of a camera
  • how to do studio photography
  • how to work with camera settings for optimum results
  • the principles of good photographic composition
  • how to work with natural and artificial lighting
  • how to boost your creativity when taking photos
  • how to do photojournalism
COMMUNITY PROJECT

Equilibria annual community project stretches over two weeks and is undoubtedly one if the most life changing activities of the gap year course. The project gives an opportunity for students to open their hearts and devote their time and energy to improve the lives of less privileged people in society. They get actively involved in renovation work, training and implementing creative methods to help others. The project provides a platform to students to showcase all the skills and character traits that they have developed during the course of the year, including perseverance, resourcefulness, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, independence and positive thinking.  Students are encouraged to work independently and to solve problems in a mature, innovative way.

THE EUROPEAN TOUR!

The year ends on a high note with an optional two week tour to Europe that offers students an unforgettable experience in the company of their classmates. Students travel in an air conditioned bus and visit the most popular European attractions such as Paris, Amsterdam, the Swiss Alps, Florence, Germany and many more. The tour is made as affordable as possible to enable the majority of our students to go on the tour. The purpose of the tour is to add the last touches of refinement to our students as they develop an informed understanding of other cultures and European lifestyles.
